ITT filed bankruptcy in 2016 amid investigations by state attorneys general and following action by the U.S. Department of Education to restrict ITT’s access to federal student aid. Since 2021, the Department has discharged $14.58 billion in federal student loans for more than one million borrowers who were defrauded by for-profit colleges. In 2022, the Department also reached a settlement to discharge an additional $6 billion in federal student loans for 200,000 borrowers who attended 151 predatory institutions.

The settlement resolves allegations that from September 2008 to March 21, 2017, ITT did not conduct the required periodic testing on six models of electrical connectors.
